Mitochondria play a crucial role in the human body. These small cell organelles are often referred to as the power plants of our cells and are found in every one of our body’s cells.

The energy released from metabolic processes is bound in ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Our mitochondria are primarily responsible for providing this energy – ATP – in the body’s cells. Without ATP, no life is possible. Diseases of the mitochondria are therefore characterised by a lack of energy, by weakness and fatigue.
Possible causes of acquired mitochondrial dysfunction include
- environmental pollution and chemical exposure (heavy metals, including in dental materials…),
- mechanical traumas (e.g. to the cervical spine),
- chronic illnesses, oxidative stress (too many free radicals, detectable in specialised laboratories),
- severe psychological traumas or shock experiences, strong and persistent mental and/or physical strain, medications (including blood pressure reducers, antibiotics, cholesterol reducers, diabetes medications, erectile dysfunction drugs),
- a nitrate-rich diet,
- and much more.
The treatment methods for mitochondriopathies are diverse and range from eliminative methods, targeted dietary changes, intestinal treatments (including microbiological therapy) and detoxification or support of the detoxification function of individual organs, all the way to orthomolecular medicine. IHHT = Interval Hypoxia–Hyperoxia Therapy
IHHT (interval hypoxia–hyperoxia therapy) is a method for strengthening the mitochondria: it is a special form of oxygen training – simulated altitude training – in which the patient is alternately supplied with oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor air through a breathing mask, in order to increase the number of intact mitochondria and to promote and boost the production of ATP.
Published studies clearly show the benefits of hypoxia training on hormones, neurotransmitters, cognition and positive emotions. The 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine went to the three scientists Kaelin/Semenza/Ratcliffe, among other things for the insight that hypoxia in particular contributes to the body’s adaptive responses ensuring a sufficient oxygen supply to all organ systems.
IHHT is used, among other things, to improve cell tuning and microcirculation, to promote blood flow, to reduce stress, to support weight loss and to increase general performance. Altitude training is frequently combined with individually composed mineral and vitamin infusions with antioxidants, administered in high doses in order to effectively neutralise free radicals and thus achieve an enhanced effect in “detoxification and cell cleansing”.
